A group of mainly non-Jewish activists challenging British antisemitism by standing with Israel launched a new campaign next to the Winston Churchill statue in Parliament Square on Saturday, titled “Some people are Zionist! Get over it!”

Mark Birbeck, founder and director of Our Fight, told The Jerusalem Post that the group launched the campaign in response to the Green Party conference’s vote on October 4, by 1,022 votes to 813, to pass a motion declaring “Zionism is racism.”

During the Parliament Square launch event on Saturday, activists wore branded t-shirts displaying the campaign slogan, held signs reading “PROUD ZIO,” utilizing a term that originated as a derogatory slur for Zionists, and carried Israeli and British flags.

Explaining the motivation behind the initiative, Our Fight activist Kurpa Patel stated to GB News, “We’re here to stand as proud Zionists, after the Green Party adopted their motion saying ‘Zionism is racism.’ We’re saying: some people are Zionist. Get over it.”

Birbeck also spoke with GB News, stating, “There are many people who support the right of Israel to exist, and that’s all Zionism is: the right of Jews to have a homeland. In response to the hysteria we’ve been seeing around the country for the last year or two, anti-Israel hysteria, we’re saying get over it. Israel’s not going anywhere.”

Birbeck told the Post that Our Fight plans to repeat the photo opportunity next month. “We’ll be asking people to come and show their support for Israel next to Churchill’s statue again,” Birbeck said.

Launch is part of “broader mensch campaign”

Birbeck said that this launch is part of their “broader mensch campaign” and that they “are organizing a conference on January 17 called ‘Be a #MENSCH,’” the campaign aims to encourage non-Jewish allies in the UK to show public, visible solidarity with the Jewish community amid rising antisemitism.

“We’ll be bringing together activists, academics, and writers to discuss the crisis of antisemitism, and broader issues relating to the nation and community,” Birbeck told the Post.

During the Green Party’s conference, Birbeck stood facing the audience at the front of the room wearing a t-shirt inscribed with the campaign slogan. Our Fight shared a video on social media showing conference organizers approaching Birbeck.

According to the group, conference organizers told him that the messaging was inappropriate before security guards and staff escorted him from the auditorium and took away his pass to block him from attending subsequent votes.
