The United States and Iran are committed to mediation efforts and are reviewing proposals aimed at bridging their differences, Qatar said on Tuesday.

It said there had been developments in talks with both sides, and that efforts to narrow gaps were continuing.

Qatar added that there was an agreement to avoid escalation in the region and the gulf, and that both the US and Iran were committed to the mediation process.

The talks come amid concerns that the conflict could escalate again after the November 3 US midterm elections.

US President Donald Trump has said the United States will not launch new attacks on Iran before the vote and that talks with Tehran have been productive, though he has not ruled out further military action thereafter.

US strikes Iran’s Qeshm Island in Strait of Hormuz

However, a US official confirmed to The Jerusalem Post on Monday that the US had carried out strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

The strikes, initially reported by the Wall Street Journal, appeared to be limited and were not a resumption of major combat operations, the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The strike came after the Revolutionary Guards said they downed a US MQ-9 drone overnight in the skies over the east of the Strait of Hormuz.

Amichai Stein and Ariella Roitman contributed to this report.
