Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday blamed the Iran war for the Republican Party’s midterm defeat and told the war’s critics they had been right, writing in a post on X that many voters who backed the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 switched to Democrats on Tuesday.
“The reason we lost is the war; the president himself said so last night,” Vance wrote, Fox News reported. “To the people who are pissed off and want to say, ‘I told you so’: You’re right, you did tell us so.”

Vance said the central problem was not turnout. “The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” he wrote, Just The News reported. He said a pollster he trusts found the top reasons disaffected voters might return to the GOP were ending the war, the cost of living, putting America first and changing U.S. ties with Israel.
“Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats,” Vance wrote, citing the pollster, who was not named.
He challenged defenders of the war directly, Axios reported: “If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there.”
Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate in Tuesday’s elections, flipping seats in states that had voted Republican for decades, as voters cited high prices and the Iran war among their top concerns. President Trump also acknowledged that the war and high prices fed the losses, while calling the attack on Iran justified and denying responsibility for the rout, Al Jazeera reported.
What it means for you: when the vice president publicly names the war as the reason for a defeat this size, pressure builds inside the Republican Party to end it – which points to fights ahead over war policy, gas prices and the administration’s agenda in the two years before the next presidential election. Vance’s post reads like the opening argument in that fight.
