Democrat Xavier Becerra is projected to defeat Republican Steve Hilton in California’s governor race, NBC News projects.
Becerra would succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, keeping the governor’s office in Democratic hands.
Becerra previously served in the California Assembly and Congress before becoming California attorney general. He later led the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden, NBC News reported.
