Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says the Democrats’ victory in the U.S. midterm elections could open the way to greater American support for Ukraine, arguing that stronger backing from Congress would put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking with Jan Böhmermann for Germany’s ZDF Magazin Royale, Zelensky thanked Republicans as well as Democrats while saying Democratic politicians had been particularly clear about assistance to Kyiv and rebuilding ties between Washington and Europe.
“I am also grateful to the Republicans, but the Democrats speak very clearly about supporting Ukraine and providing assistance to Ukraine,” Zelensky said, according to Reuters’ report carried by NDTV. The remarks were released ahead of the interview’s television broadcast.
Hope for more aid, not an announced package
The broadcaster’s own account confirms that Zelensky said he hoped a new balance of power in Washington would bring more support. ZDF also quoted him saying that stronger financial or weapons assistance from Congress, comparable to Europe’s support, could influence Putin.
The comments describe Zelensky’s expectations about future U.S. policy. They do not announce a congressional vote, an approved aid package, a weapons delivery or a change in the administration’s policy.
Zelensky’s argument is that sustained American and European backing could change Moscow’s assessment of whether to continue the war. He also stressed the importance of the relationship between the United States and Europe in confronting Russia.
Interview addresses the war and SpaceX
In the same interview, Zelensky said an end to the war must preserve Ukraine’s dignity, according to ZDF’s reporting. He said he would be ready for elections after the war ended and an orderly transition period.
Asked about Elon Musk, Zelensky thanked SpaceX for providing connectivity that had been helpful at the beginning of Russia’s invasion, while making clear that he disagreed with Musk’s position on the war. That statement is not an announcement of a new satellite agreement or service disruption.
ZDF says the full interview became available online on November 5 ahead of its November 6 television broadcast. The central remarks about the U.S. election and aid had already been released on November 4. A video clip circulating later does not make those comments a newly announced U.S. commitment.
