‘I would be happy if a military coup overthrew Netanyahu,’ says PM’s former friend

Writer Eyal Megged, a former friend of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told Benny Ziffer, editor of Haaretz’s literary supplement and an associate of the Netanyahu family, on 103FM on Tuesday morning that he would prefer if his cat were in charge over Netanyahu, and that he would be happy for a military coup.

Megged began the conversation by commenting on Netanyahu’s Monday night visit to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.

“I’m truly more concerned about the soldiers who arrive at the hospital at night near where I live, Rambam Hospital  –  soldiers who are seriously wounded and will suffer their whole lives from Netanyahu’s insane adventures. So the condition of his teeth doesn’t move me.”

‘I would be happy. If my cat took power instead of Bibi’

Megged then expressed shock over the conduct of the campaign in Lebanon.

“The deterioration of the country is unbelievable. Now there is a situation in which a completely pointless war is continuing in Lebanon, and we are absorbing Hezbollah’s blows, after we pushed it back decades, and now it is slaughtering our soldiers, and the army doesn’t [stop him].

“I would be happy if there were a military coup against Netanyahu. We cannot continue with this madness. How much longer? One family controls the country? I would be happy if there were a military coup in Israel. I would be happy.

“If my cat took power instead of Bibi, it would be better for the country. This Bibi has decided that he is destroying us. He doesn’t care what will happen to the country after he leaves.”

‘History proves that the prime minister functions perfectly well’

Ziffer defended Netanyahu in response.

“I am concerned by more important things…Unlike those people who follow every step of the prime minister, I have a life of my own. From time to time, I take an interest in how Bibi and Sara are doing, but it’s not an obsession.

“People follow every step he takes medically – and not out of empathy, but out of an obsession. It shows a sickness in those people; it is not mentally healthy. It is a kind of disorder to run after every little peep from the prime minister. Dental treatment? Teeth cleaning? History proves that the prime minister functions perfectly well.”

Megged replied by questioning whether Netanyahu should be allowed to continue leading the country.

“Should we let him act until he brings about the final destruction of this country? Do you see our situation? Do you see the bereaved families? Do you see what is happening in the military cemeteries?”

“Anyone who thinks these upcoming elections will remove Bibi from the stage of history is completely mistaken. This man is determined to leave the stage of history in blood, fire, and pillars of smoke.”
