Travelers using JFK Airport’s AirTrain late Tuesday or Wednesday will need to take free shuttle buses on parts of their journey as overnight maintenance closes different sections of the system on consecutive nights.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s official JFK advisory lists two work periods: 10 p.m. Tuesday, October 27, to 6 a.m. Wednesday, October 28; and 10 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, to 6 a.m. Thursday, October 29. All times are local.
The routes affected will change from one night to the next. During the first work period, there will be no AirTrain service between Howard Beach, Lefferts Boulevard and the airline terminals. Trains will continue operating between Jamaica and Federal Circle only.
Free ground-level buses will connect Federal Circle with all terminals and Howard Beach and Lefferts Boulevard with all terminals. A separate continuous bus loop will serve Terminals 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8. The airport says buses will display their assigned routes on electronic signs.
On the second night, the closure shifts to the section between Jamaica and Federal Circle. Free buses will replace trains between those stations. AirTrain service will continue from Howard Beach, Lefferts Boulevard and Federal Circle to and from all terminals.
That means a traveler connecting through Jamaica faces different transfers depending on the night: a bus from Federal Circle toward the terminals on Tuesday night, but a bus between Jamaica and Federal Circle on Wednesday night.
The airport is asking customers to allow additional time, especially for journeys requiring transfers at Federal Circle. Customer service agents will be available at open AirTrain stations and bus stops to help passengers find the correct service.
The airport’s AirTrain page also carries the maintenance notice. The work is a partial service disruption, not a shutdown of the entire AirTrain system.
