Democrat Claire Valdez has won New York’s 7th Congressional District, NBC News projects, defeating Republican Melvin Rivera and independent Priscilla Ghaznavi.

Valdez will succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Nydia Velazquez, keeping the seat in Democratic hands. In a June 23 report on the Democratic primary, NBC projected that Valdez defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.

That June report described Valdez as a first-term state Assembly member and said New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani supported her primary campaign. Velazquez backed Reynoso in that earlier contest.

NBC’s district results page listed Valdez as its projected winner when checked Tuesday night. The network identifies its Decision Desk as the source of its race projections.

The 7th District results page includes returns from Brooklyn’s Kings County and Queens County. NBC’s projection covers the congressional contest, not other New York races or control of the House.

The page was updated at 9:14 p.m. Eastern when reviewed; it did not show an exact time for the race call. This report includes no vote totals or margin, and the media projection is not an election certification.
