Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas U.S. Senate race, flipping the seat to Democrats, according to the Fox News Decision Desk. CBS News and NBC News also called Talarico’s victory Tuesday night.

Talarico, a state representative, former teacher and Presbyterian seminarian, campaigned on lowering costs and fighting corruption, CBS reported.

Paxton, the state’s attorney general, defeated incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff, according to CBS.

Official vote counting and certification continue after media race calls and concessions.

UPI documented Ken Paxton conceding the Senate election to Talarico at his election-night watch party.
