Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in the Texas governor’s race, according to The Associated Press, NBC News and CBS News. The Texas Tribune, republished by Click2Houston, reported that Abbott conceded at 10 p.m. Tuesday.
The result moves the governor’s office from Republican to Democratic control. Abbott was seeking a fourth term. Hinojosa will become Texas’ first Latina governor.
Hinojosa, a lawyer and former Austin school board president, focused her campaign on public education funding, teacher pay, opposition to school vouchers and household costs.
Vote counting and official certification continue after a race is called or a candidate concedes.
