Democrat Denise Powell defeated Republican Brinker Harding in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, flipping the open Republican-held seat, Nebraska Examiner reported.

The Examiner reported that The Associated Press called the race for Powell shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday. Harding conceded around 9:03 p.m., according to the report.

Powell will serve a two-year term in the Omaha-area district. She co-founded a group that coached local women on running for office. The district had been represented by Republican Don Bacon.

The Examiner reported that Powell will be the first woman and first Latina elected to federal office in Nebraska. Libertarian Eric Michael Foreman also ran in the general election.

Official vote counting and certification continue after media race calls and concessions.
