Democratic state Sen. Mike McGuire is projected to defeat Republican Rep. James Gallagher in California’s redrawn 1st Congressional District, flipping the seat to Democrats.

ABC10 reported an Associated Press call for McGuire, and NBC News listed him as the projected winner.

This was not a contest under the same boundaries Gallagher won earlier this year. Gallagher won a June special election to finish the term of Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa, who died earlier in 2026. The November election used new district boundaries adopted under Proposition 50.

A media race call is not official election certification. Archive photo: McGuire at a Kincade Fire press conference in 2019.
