House Speaker Mike Johnson will step aside from Republican leadership in the next Congress following his party’s midterm election losses. He will not seek support to become minority leader when Democrats take control of the chamber in January. The Associated Press confirmed the decision with two people familiar with it.
Johnson is expected to remain a rank-and-file House member after winning a sixth term representing his Shreveport-area Louisiana district.
The decision opens the contest to lead House Republicans. Steve Scalise has announced a bid, and Republicans are scheduled to hold their internal leadership election on November 10, NBC News reported.
