Six people were killed in a fire that tore through a two-story residential building in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood early Thursday, according to the FDNY.
More than 230 fire and EMS personnel responded to the blaze on 58th Street around 1:40 a.m. It grew to a three-alarm fire, collapsing the second floor and a staircase and spreading to a neighboring building, CBS New York reported.
Firefighters found four people dead inside, and two others died at the hospital. Several more people were hurt, including firefighters and police officers; reports differ on the exact number. Eight people were displaced and taken to hotels, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
“This was a devastating fire,” Mamdani said. “It will take a long time for this neighborhood to mourn the neighbors they lost this morning.”
The cause remains under investigation. Hazmat teams were called after a lithium-ion battery was found inside the building, and the fire marshal is working to determine whether it sparked the blaze, CBS New York reported.
For readers: the fire comes a little more than a week after a 10-year-old died in the Bronx when an e-scooter battery burst into flames inside an apartment. Fire officials have repeatedly warned about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries.
