A fund affiliated with Kraken parent Payward and its clients have bought an undisclosed amount of AAVE tokens, adding exposure to decentralized lending as the exchange group expands beyond cryptocurrency trading.

The purchases were made through Digital Asset Special Investments I, LP, a Payward-affiliated investment fund, and clients, according to an Aave announcement published Thursday. The tokens were bought in the secondary market, and Payward may make additional purchases.

The distinction matters: this is a purchase of tokens from market sellers, not an announced equity acquisition of Aave or a direct capital injection into Aave. Neither the number of tokens acquired nor the amount paid was disclosed.

From trading to onchain lending exposure

Aave lets users lend and borrow digital assets through blockchain-based smart contracts. Its AAVE token gives holders governance rights over the network and its treasury, according to Aave. Buying the token provides exposure to that ecosystem, rather than ownership of ordinary company shares.

For Payward, the investment advances an asset-management business that connects clients with digital assets, structured yield and tokenized investments. The company’s infrastructure powers Kraken as well as other financial products. The purchase signals a major exchange group’s interest in the lending infrastructure behind crypto, beyond the trading activity that made exchanges familiar to consumers.

Gurpreet Oberoi, Payward’s vice president of asset management and institutional, said the investment reflected its long-term conviction in onchain credit markets and decentralized finance, as well as growing client demand for exposure. Those are the company’s stated investment reasons, not a guarantee of returns.

What remains unknown

CoinDesk reported that Payward and Aave are also exploring future collaboration, without disclosed details. Thursday’s announcement does not set out a timetable or size for additional token purchases.

For investors, the missing purchase amount limits what can be concluded about the scale of Payward’s position. The announcement establishes a new token investment and a direction for its asset-management business. It does not establish a takeover, a new lending guarantee or a commitment to buy a fixed amount of AAVE in the future.
