A preliminary autopsy found no indication of third-party involvement in the death of Hubert Aiwanger, Bavaria’s deputy premier, Berlin prosecutors said Thursday. Further forensic examinations are planned and the investigation is continuing.
Aiwanger, 55, was found dead in his hotel room in Berlin-Mitte early Wednesday evening, prosecutors said. He was Bavaria’s economy minister and chairman of the Free Voters party, a conservative party that has long been a fixture of Bavarian politics, DW reported.
Aiwanger had been scheduled to speak at the opening of a party office in Berlin on Wednesday but canceled after feeling unwell, German media reported.
For readers: the Free Voters govern Bavaria in coalition with the Christian Social Union, and Aiwanger was one of the state’s most prominent politicians. Prosecutors stressed that the cause of death has not been established.
