Czechia Prepares to Buy Four More Rafael SPYDER Systems as It Builds a National Air Defense Network

The Czech Republic is preparing to acquire four additional SPYDER All-in-One air defense systems from Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Globes reported, citing the Czech news agency CTK.

Czech Defense Minister Jaromir Zuna told the defense committee of parliament in Prague that the ministry is getting ready for the purchase. No contract has been signed, and no price was disclosed. The move, together with a planned national air defense command-and-control system, is expected to bring Rafael additional revenue measured in the billions of shekels, according to the report.

The planned expansion reflects a shift in Czech thinking: from systems designed mainly to defend individual sites to a broader national air defense network. Rafael is expected to lead development of the national command-and-control system that would bring all of the country’s air defense capabilities under one roof.

Czechia chose the SPYDER in 2021 under a government-to-government agreement led by Israel’s Ministry of Defense, becoming the first NATO member state to buy a complete end-to-end air defense system from Israel. At the NATO Days show in Ostrava in September, attended by some 200,000 people, Czech and Rafael leaders presented the system as a milestone in the two countries’ defense partnership.

The SPYDER is built to handle a range of aerial threats, including drones, aircraft, helicopters and short-range ballistic missiles, using interceptors from Rafael’s Python and Derby families. Because the system is Israeli-made without American involvement, its sale to foreign countries does not require U.S. approval – a significant export advantage over systems such as David’s Sling.

What it means: a follow-on Czech order would deepen Rafael’s foothold in NATO Europe at a moment when European governments are racing to rebuild air defenses. For Israel’s defense industry, the planned national command system may matter even more than the launchers – it would make Rafael the architect of an entire NATO country’s air defense network.
