Democrats won control of the Texas state House in Tuesday’s midterm elections, part of sweeping gains in state governments across the country, the Associated Press reported.

Republicans had controlled the chamber since the 2002 election. The flip follows historic Democratic wins for governor and U.S. Senate in the state, AP reported. The Texas Tribune reported that Gov. Greg Abbott was unseated by Gina Hinojosa and that James Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race, leaving Texas with its first divided government in decades.

Final House margins were still being determined Wednesday. The results cap a night of Democratic gains in state capitols nationwide.
