Faropoint has started construction on a 1.6-megawatt rooftop community-solar installation in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, launching the first project in a planned statewide portfolio of more than 10 megawatts.

The installation is on the industrial real-estate manager’s building at 19-05 Nevins Road. It is the first of 16 community-solar projects Faropoint is pursuing across New Jersey.

The other 15 projects, totaling about 8.5 megawatts, have been accepted into the state’s Community Solar Energy Program. Nine of those have received notices to proceed, allowing construction to begin. Program acceptance and permission to proceed do not mean all 16 projects are already under construction.

Capacity reserved for lower-income households

At least half of each project’s capacity is reserved for low- and moderate-income households. That requirement makes the customer allocation part of the portfolio’s structure, alongside the use of commercial rooftops for generation.

Faropoint estimates that the full 16-project portfolio will generate about 12.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. That is a projection for the entire portfolio, not the expected output of the Fair Lawn installation alone.

The announcement did not provide a completion date for the Fair Lawn project or quantify subscribers’ savings. The start of construction is a development milestone, rather than an announcement that the system is producing electricity.

Industrial rooftops gain another use

Faropoint specializes in last-mile industrial properties. The solar work adds an energy use to roof space across its New Jersey holdings without requiring a separate ground-mounted site for the Fair Lawn installation.

SolarKal is advising Faropoint on the portfolio, including financial analysis, competitive procurement, developer evaluation and project management. The adviser also helped select developers able to use available federal clean-energy incentives, according to the companies.

Faropoint and SolarKal are also working on community-solar projects in Illinois, New York and Maryland. The construction start, project status and portfolio forecasts are detailed in their announcement.
