OpenAI has named former Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to a new role as Senior Counselor for National Security Modernization, advising the company’s leadership and outside partners on the use of advanced artificial intelligence in national and cybersecurity.

In its OpenAI announcement dated November 2, the company said Driscoll will focus particularly on working with U.S. allies to advance responsible use of AI. The Washington Examiner also reported the hire Monday evening.

The appointment is a company hire, not an announcement of a government AI contract or procurement decision. OpenAI did not specify a start date, reporting line, pay or contract terms.

Advising on modernization

OpenAI said Driscoll will work with teams inside the company and with leaders across governments, industry, academia and allied institutions on practical modernization initiatives. He will also help its internal teams understand the operational needs of national security institutions.

The company said he will advise public- and private-sector partners on policy and strategy choices for applying AI to national security. It linked the appointment to its Daybreak program, which it described as work with allies and partners to strengthen cyber resilience and protect essential services.

Driscoll previously served as the 26th Secretary of the Army, overseeing operations, modernization and resources. OpenAI said his background spans military service, senior government leadership and the private sector.

In a statement included in the announcement, Driscoll said he was joining to help the United States and its allies use the technology responsibly. He pointed to reducing paperwork, processing information and getting answers to people working in national security.

The announcement sets out an advisory role and the company’s goals for it. It does not identify a new government customer, an awarded contract or a specific deployment.
