PALM BEACH, Fla. – President Donald Trump said Saturday night that Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro can remain in the United States “as long as he wants,” offering public support after Bolsonaro left Brazil following his presidential election defeat.

Trump made the comment to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, according to an account of his remarks. He also said he has no plans to meet with Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro lost the presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and traveled to the United States afterward. Trump’s statement addresses whether he is welcome to stay, but does not by itself establish a new visa, asylum grant or other formal immigration decision.
