PALM BEACH, Fla. – President Donald Trump said Saturday night, according to a published account of his remarks, that the United States could strike one or two remaining Iranian nuclear sites “in ten minutes,” while signaling that he is in no hurry to resume military action.
In remarks to reporters at a Halloween gathering at Mar-a-Lago, Trump said American forces had already inflicted heavy damage on Iran’s military. His comments described what the United States could do, not an announcement of a new attack. No new strike order was announced in the remarks.
“We’re not in that much of a hurry from the standpoint that we’ve knocked down their Navy, we’ve knocked out their air force, we’ve knocked out their anti-aircraft,” Trump said, according to an account of his remarks.
Discussing Iranian nuclear facilities, he added: “I would say 1 or 2 sites, but we can do that in ten minutes.” He specifically mentioned the underground facility known as Pickaxe Mountain.
The president’s claims about the extent of the damage to Iran’s forces have not been independently verified for this report. His estimate of how quickly another operation could be conducted does not establish the condition of the remaining sites or the outcome of a possible strike.
For now, the distinction is between a military option and a decision to use it. Trump is keeping the possibility of further strikes open while saying the United States does not need to act immediately.
