President Donald Trump said the war with Iran contributed to Republican losses in the midterm elections, while defending his decision to launch the conflict.
“Iran was a piece of it,” Trump said in a Tuesday-night phone interview with The Wall Street Journal, when asked whether the war contributed to his party’s poor performance.
He said he had no regrets: “I don’t think about it. I did the right thing. I would have done it again.” The Journal’s interview was republished by To Vima; Jewish Insider also reported the remarks.
Trump identified rising oil prices, rather than the war itself, as the bigger political liability, according to the Journal. He rejected the idea that the results were a rebuke of his presidency.
For people at home, the pressure point Trump named is one they feel every time they fill up: rising oil prices.
“It was a point in time, and I wasn’t on the ballot,” he said. “The biggest issue is that I wasn’t on the ballot.”
The president also told the Journal he planned no personnel changes in his administration and backed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. “I think he’s terrific actually,” Trump said.
On working with Democrats, Trump said: “I think we’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll get along very well with them. If we don’t, we’ll be very tough on them, they’ll be very tough on us.” The Journal reported that he did not challenge the validity of the election results.
