Florida and New York are projected to keep their governor’s offices with the parties that already hold them: Republicans in Florida and Democrats in New York. The outcomes preserve party control even though one state is choosing a new governor while the other is returning its incumbent.
In Florida, NBC News projects Republican Byron Donalds will defeat Democrat David Jolly. Donalds would succeed Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose term limit prevented another reelection bid, according to Fox News’ election-night reporting. Florida’s governor’s office lists DeSantis as the current governor.
New York’s result is a reelection rather than a succession. The Fox News Decision Desk projects Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul will defeat Republican Bruce Blakeman, keeping the office in Democratic hands. Hochul’s official biography records that she became governor in 2021.
The distinction is between continuity of party and continuity of officeholder. Under the projections, Florida changes governors without changing the party in charge, while New York retains both its governor and the governing party.
These are separate state-level media projections, not election certifications. They do not determine control of Congress, and this comparison includes no vote totals, margins or claims about polling accuracy.
